The Beckham Effect: Interest in American Soccer Continues to Climb
Austin, TX (PRWEB) July 20, 2007 -- Lights, camera, action -- a phrase Los Angeles knows too well. While those three words are often associated with the film industry, Hollywood's latest star is bringing a new meaning to the phrase. Stadium lights blazing, cameras capturing every move, and David Beckham is certainly no stranger to action on the field. Continuous coverage of Beckham's shift to the LA Galaxy increases immediate attention to American soccer, but many are skeptical of whether his star power is enough to sustain and even grow interest in American soccer. After reviewing MLS ticket sales for the upcoming season, the answer is yes.
In comparing tickets sales this year alone, the addition of Beckham is impacting ticket prices. "There is a definite increase in demand for MLS tickets now than from earlier this year," comments Randy Cohen, CEO for Ticket City. "Typically tickets for Galaxy games were selling from $20-$40 and are now selling for $150 and up."
Beckham's presence is helping to increase the American fan base as the MLS is announcing the comeback of the San Jose Earthquakes and plans to start two new teams by 2010. "Introducing an international star to the MLS is a pivotal move for the future of American soccer," states Cohen.
At 12 years old, American professional soccer steadily gains new fans each year. Yet this year, soccer is experiencing quite a growth spurt. Beckham's international stardom is impacting current interest in soccer and it appears to have staying power, as more fans demand to see their favorite players live.
To watch Beckham in action, Ticket City is offering deals to all Galaxy and MLS games. To purchase tickets, fans should call (800) SOLD-OUT or go online to www.TicketCity.com.
