Soccer - Basic Formations
As with most teams sports soccer, or football as it's known in the western world, is a game played with players in certain positions to perform certain roles. There are many different formations which make up the total of eleven players allowed on the field at any one time such as four, four, two or four, five, one or five, three, two etc not including the goalkeeper. For this article will will work with the traditional four, four, two line up. For starters we have the goalkeeper who basically has to stop the other team scoring a goal. If his team keep a clean sheet he has done his job. He is also the only player in the team who is allowed to handle the ball but only within a certain area. Next on the pitch are the defenders. In our line up we will have a two central defenders in the middle and two full backs out wide. The central defenders will try and stop the opposition strikers scoring while the full backs will stop any attack from wide positions to get crosses in for the strikers to score from. If your team are dominating the full backs might push forward and help in attacking positions as well. Next up we have the midfielders. This is where many games are won and lost. The two central midfielders will try and dictate the play and push the opposition back. They are very important because when you have the ball they will link the play between defence and attack, and when the opposition have the ball they will sit back and try to break down the play and get the ball back for their team. Out wide from the central midfielders are the left and right wingers. They will try to attack the oppositions full backs and get crosses in for their forward players to feed off. If you have quick wingers and can get the better of the full backs it is very hard to defend against crosses from the by line and your strikers will probably have a prosperous day. Finally we have the players that 99% of the time get all the glory, the strikers. They are responsible for scoring the goals and a good striker is worth his weight in gold, hence the massive salaries they can command. If your strikers score about forty goals between them then you are going to have a decent season. There are some variations to this formation depending on whether you are away from home and want to be cautious so play with an extra defender or maybe you are at home against a weaker team and play with and extra attacker. All and all the best teams are the ones that can inter change alot and gel together. A good team should always be bigger than the sum of the parts, so if you have that 'x-factor' as well as the individual talent then you will be successful.
